Quick Tips and Ideas
Think of marketing as another word for communication
People in general are very social. We all like to talk, and we also like to hear what is going on in our family and friends' lives. Marketing is the same thing for your business. Sending the right message to the right people using the right medium at the right time will increase the likelihood that someone will come to you for your products and services.
Marketing vs Promotion
Marketing is the overall strategy you use to let people know about your business or organization. It can include many things: advertising, special events, coupons, discounts, special purchases, etc. A promotion is a specific activity you implement in order to bring people into your business or organization.
Marketing vs Advertising
Advertising is a very specific form of marketing that you purchase. It includes: print (newspaper & magazine), radio, TV, billboard, direct mail, Internet (web banners and ads), etc.
Marketing vs Public Relations
Effective public relations targets trusted media sources such as newspapers, TV and radio stations. It can also include influential bloggers with a large following who communicate with your target audiences.
Establishing relationships with these sources is the key to getting them to cover your story. And just because you maintain contact with them does not guarantee that they will cover your story. You cannot pay them to run your press release or send a photographer to your event. But if they choose to write an article about you or relay the information in their blog, the rewards can be significant.
